Environment & Conservation

The farm was one of the first to take part in the Countryside Stewardship Scheme in 1999. This involved the planting of 6 metre wide grass buffer strips around every field, giving public access around some fields and hedge planting.

As well as the preservation of ancient ridge and furrow grassland in Hilgay and the creation of a reed bed to encourage and protect wildlife habitats.

In 2011 the farm entered into the Entry and Higher Level Stewardship (ELS & HLS) Environmental schemes. In addition to all the features created and maintained since 1999, Legge Farms have now ‘layed’ the hedges planted 12 years ago.

With the help of Southery Internal Drainage Board, a wetland area was created for wintering waders and wildfowl.

Other features include a ‘beetle bank’ and areas of wild bird seed and pollen and nectar mix.
